What Causes Knee Pain Getting Up From The Floor?

If knee pain makes it difficult for you to get up from the floor, make sure to read this post.

You'll learn how to get up from the floor without putting pressure on your knees.

Yes, you read that correctly!

  • You don't have to kneel.
  • You don't have to lunge get in a lunge position.
  • You don't have to squat.

The Normal Way Of Getting Up From The Floor

I've done other videos about how to get up from the floor after a fall, and largely for most people, I would recommend crawling over to something, stepping up into a lunge position, and then pressing up using your legs.

But if you have knee pain when kneeling, the pressure on your knees can be painful.

It might also be painful to go from a kneeling position to a standing position.

Additionally, if you want to do something like having a picnic in a park or sitting on the beach, you may not have something to crawl over to for help with balance.

An Alternative Way To Get Up From The Floor

In this post, I'll show you an alternative technique that you can use to get up from the floor without having to put pressure on your knees.

Now, with any technique, there are some give and takes and compromises that you have to make.

With this particular technique, you do have to put some pressure through your wrists and hands, which can be difficult or painful if you have osteoarthritis on your wrists.

Additionally, it requires a little bit of upper body strength.

Finally, the biggest thing is that it requires you to be able to move your hips a little bit quickly.

There's a practice technique that I'll show you at the end of this on how you can practice getting up from the floor.

But I would recommend, as you're doing this technique for the first time, that you have someone around who can help you get up from the floor if you need it... either another adult or a physical therapist.

For this technique, you will start out sitting on the floor with your ankles crossed.

Whichever ankle you have crossed over top, you're going to lean away from that leg.

Then, you'll take your hands and put them over to the side that you're leaning towards.

Next, place your the weight of your trunk onto your hands and quickly swing your buttocks up in the air.

You swing your buttocks up in the air by pivoting around your ankles and hands and tucking your head down.

See the video above for a demonstration.

If you have trouble getting on the floor, just perform this technique in reverse.

You just place your hands down towards the floor and cross your ankles.

Then roll your buttocks down the floor by pivoting around your hands and ankles.

Conclusion

Hopefully this post helped you learn how to get up from the floor if without kneeling or putting pressure on your knees.

What If I Can't Get Up From The Floor This Way?

If you try this technique and it's too difficult for you, you can always go over to a stable object such as a couch.

Then push up into a half-lunging position and come up to standing.

This is the default movement technique that I would recommend to most people who don't have knee pain.

You can learn that technique in this post about How To Get Up From The Floor After A Fall.
