Do You Limp When You Walk?
If so, watch the video to learn why you limp when you walk, plus how to stop it so that you can walk normally.
What Causes Limping When You Walk?
Limping often occurs due to weak hip muscles, particularly your gluteus medius and gluteus minimus.
These muscles are responsible for keeping your pelvis level as you balance on one leg during a step.
If your hip muscles are weak, you may either tip away from your stance leg or shift your weight over it to stabilize.
Both patterns can lead to overuse and strain on the tendons and muscles around the hip.
Effects of Limping on Your Body
Over time, limping can overstretch the tendons and muscles around the hip, leading to conditions like tendinitis, tendinopathy, or hip bursitis.
Limping can also cause secondary problems like lower back pain as your body adapts to the altered walking pattern.
Although shifting your weight can reduce hip pain, it often creates a dysfunctional walking pattern that weakens the hip muscles even further.
How to Stop Limping When You Walk
The key to stopping a limp is strengthening the hip muscles.
Here are some simple exercises to help you stop limping when you walk:
- Balancing on One Leg: Stand on one leg, keeping your pelvis level and your weight centered. Start with short intervals and increase as you improve.
- Stepping Motions: Once you're steady, add stepping motions with the opposite foot to mimic walking.
- Assisted Balance: If balancing is difficult, keep the non-stance foot lightly on the floor for support. You can also use a chair or counter for added stability.
Why Using a Cane Can Help
Many people resist using a cane, fearing it will make them weaker. However, the opposite is true.
Walking with a cane can actually make you stronger.
A cane can help offload the weight on your weak hip, allowing you to walk without limping.
Over time, as your hip muscles get stronger, you'll rely less on the cane.
This approach trains your brain to use a normal walking pattern, preventing further complications and eventually eliminating the need for the cane.
