Lower back pain: knowledge is power

If you read my previous post, you now know that no one type of exercise is better than any other type for recovering from lower back pain.  However, adding pain education to an exercise program can further improve results versus just exercise alone.  Two recent studies have demonstrated this.  In the first one, "De-educate to re-educate: aging and low back pain" fifty adults age 50-93 with chronic lower back pain were given a single education session to challenge common misconceptions that people have about lower back pain.  Subjects experienced immediate improvements in pain and fear without having to apply any other type of treatment.  In the second study, "Pain Neurophysiology Education and Therapeutic Exercise for Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain," 56 patients with chronic lower back pain were put on a 3-month exercise program.  Half of them were also given education about pain.  At the end of the 3 months, the patients who also received the education had significantly less pain (an average of 2.2 points on a scale of 0-10) than those who only exercised.  The results of these studies show that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
