Knee Replacement Massage: Relieve Pain and Improve Motion

If you’ve had a total knee replacement, gentle massage can help reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness. Here are safe and effective knee replacement massage techniques you can try at home.

Knee Replacement Massage to Decrease Swelling and Pain

Start with gentle massage of the calf and thigh to reduce swelling and ease pain. Use a massage stick or rolling pin. Always stroke upward toward your heart to help fluid drain.

Massage each side of the calf and behind the knee for about a minute. Then move up to the hamstring and thigh, continuing to massage in an upward direction. Use light pressure and avoid massaging directly over the surgical site.

Knee Replacement Scar Massage

Only begin scar massage after your incision has fully healed. Use your fingers to gently rub along each side of the scar. Try small circles and side-to-side motions.

This helps loosen the scar tissue from deeper tissues like tendons or muscles. Good scar mobility makes it easier to bend your knee and move normally.

Knee Replacement Trigger Point Massage

To release tight spots, or “trigger points,” use your fingertips to find sore or stiff areas in the thigh or calf. Apply gentle, steady pressure to each point for 1.5 to 3 minutes.

You can also use a massage stick to work into these spots. If you find tender areas in your calf, press on both sides to trap the trigger point. Be cautious—if your calf is red, warm, or swollen, talk to your doctor before massaging it.

Using a Massage Gun

Massage guns can help reduce stiffness later in recovery. Don’t use one in the first month after surgery. If you’re within three months, check with your doctor first.

Use the massage gun on your thigh and calf. Move it slowly along the muscle. If you find a tight spot, hold pressure there briefly until the muscle relaxes. This can make movement more comfortable.

Final Thoughts

These knee replacement massage techniques can reduce pain and help you move better. But massage alone isn’t enough. You’ll also need to do exercises to improve flexibility and strength.
